I met Laurie at a Women’s Business Forum meeting. She was so genuine, I thought it would be fun to have coffee over the phone with her to get to know her better. After a great chat she invited me to be a part of the Member Circle. I couldn’t say no. Who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by a supportive group of women with like minds and spirit? After the first phone call, I felt very welcome and loved the positive vibes and celebrations the women were having in their businesses.
I’m excited for the future of my business and how the Circle is going to support my journey. A little background on my business:
I created My Focus Book for myself originally. I was reading “The Success Principles” by Jack Canfield and it struck a chord with me. I understood why it was important to keep my goals with me but I was also irritated. Just one more thing to carry around with me. I have ADHD and I lose things easily. I wanted something where I could easily keep my goals with me, manage my schedule, work on my personal development and create some new successful habits all in one place. I couldn’t find what I wanted anywhere, so I decided to make it myself. It turned out, lots of people are feeling exactly the same way I was. So, I took a step and turned my focus book into My Focus Book, LLC. Now I provide the original My Focus Book and customized focus books for small businesses and organizations.
As a free spirit I never wanted to be tied down to a schedule. It felt so constricting. While at UCLA I was pestered by my mentor to create a Weekly Plan. I grunted, “I already have so much to do. This is a waste of time.” Finally giving in, I made a Weekly Plan and Goal Producing Activities List. At the end of my sophomore year I decided that I would be graduating at the end of the following year. Everyone thought I was crazy, that it wasn’t possible. But…I completed two years of UCLA requirements in one while working, so my mom didn’t have to pay for room and board. I kept my social life, had almost straight A’s that year, and significantly reduced my stress. I actually had more fun that year than my previous years at UCLA. Did I mention, I’m not a Doogie Howser?
I’m 25 now and it’s fun to see others reach their goals and have fun while using My Focus Book. Owning a business with my mom is like a dream come true. As the Chief Focusing Officer, it is my personal mission to teach you how to use this tool so that you can have YOUR LIFE BACK!!!
Our goal for the business is to sell 10,000 My Focus Book Planners by November 1, 2010. I know we can do it and I can’t wait to celebrate with you.

When I met Laurie Hacking last summer (at a Heartlink meeting of course!), I was struggling and frustrated. I wanted to shift the direction of my consulting business, but I was not sure what to do or how to do it.
Laurie invited me to take her upcoming Wealth Flow System Six-Week Teleseminar. I was hesitant. I had worked with a coach a few years ago, and experienced few results after spending thousands of dollars. Laurie made it clear that her client’s satisfaction is very important to her, and if I did not see results, she would refund my money.
So, I decided to take the plunge, and Laurie’s Teleseminar turned out to be the first step in an exciting phase of creative development for me. From the beginning, Laurie encouraged me to be open and curious about possibilities that would bring me joy.
Hmmm…I hadn’t experienced a lot of joy in my career. Having spent several years at Disney and Paramount, I developed an extensive background in branding, licensing and marketing. The studios were an excellent training ground, but were not the best fit for me personally. At heart I am a creative entrepreneur, and I prefer the flexibility to work on a variety of projects.
So, several years ago I ventured away from the corporate life, and created CM Perspectives, a licensing, marketing and brand development consultancy dedicated to cultivating new markets for my clients. I continued to work with Paramount as a strategic marketing partner, and also launched and managed licensing programs for several talented artists.
I enjoyed being an entrepreneur, but I still wasn’t completely happy. I often felt stuck in the role of the “business” person, assisting my clients with sales, deals, and contracts. I realized, however, that my favorite projects involved creative collaboration with my clients. I discovered that I have a keen eye for marketable goods and product design. And that’s where I wanted to focus going forward.
I had this wild idea that I discussed with Laurie. I wanted to work with designers, retailers, and manufacturers of Western inspired products. I have a passion for the West, and have collected Western apparel, accessories, boots, and Native American jewelry for many years. Just thinking about the idea brought a huge smile to my face!
At the same time, I knew it would be a big risk. I had already made one attempt to collaborate with manufacturers of Western apparel and accessories a few years ago. I met many wonderful, talented people…who could not afford to pay me. But I knew in my heart that this was what I was meant to be doing.
By November of last year, I was ready to take a huge leap of faith. I formed Maverick Design and Marketing, a new-media venture that combines my passion for Western design with my expertise in consumer products, branding, and marketing. I look for distinctive artists and designers, products and boutiques that will appeal to America’s free spirits, and showcase them on my new website and blog, MaverickStyle.net. Maverick Style features upscale clothing, trendy accessories, sophisticated home décor and more – big city style in the spirit of the West.
Maverick Design and Marketing is a new venture, and I don’t know where it will lead me. But I do know one thing for sure. This IS what I am supposed to be doing, and there’s no stopping me now!

Last year I had the good fortune to meet Laurie at a Heartlink meeting held by my friend Sally Kraus. Because my communications business was still evolving, she reached out to me the day after. I remember our first conversation. It was so inspiring. We talked about everything from the power of positive energy to our mutual mentor Napoleon Hill to how to get clear in business. At the time I had no idea of Laurie’s extensive business background, I just knew I’d wished for a mastermind partner and she appeared in my life.
She said she was being led to give, and offered a free 4-week teleseminar class. I jumped on the opportunity. During those first calls, I learned it was okay not to know exactly where I was going! Talk about a huge whew! Then, with her encouragement I got curious, which is the first step, and things started to come into focus. Curiosity led to a new clarity – the next step towards building more in my life. Ironically, what I became clear about was that it’s okay to be unclear. But somehow, that worked for me. Once I realized that, I began to see what I have to offer.
I continued on with Laurie in a four-month ‘Step Into More’ seminar and that brought together amazing women, who became my mastermind group of gals. They helped me see that I have much to offer my clients.
I have extensive background in marketing for fortune 500 companies such as Mattel, Universal and Fox, which includes advertising, publicity and commercial and television production. I’m a highly creative, industrious and quirky writer, who loves to tell a story. My favorite thing to do is help entrepreneurs and small businesses develop an identity – to present a verbal and visual picture of themselves. I work with them to create strategies that generate a buzz to attract more clients and grow their companies. Combine that with my desire to have fun in all that I do and get a winning blend of business.
Not that this journey has always been easy. As every solopreneur knows, there are days when doubt creeps in and clogs your flow. This is the great thing about working with Laurie, she was there to support me through those times as well. She offered feedback that led me to create my own solutions, which kept me moving forward.
In the movie Almost Famous, character Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand) said, ”Be bold and Mighty Forces will come to your aid.” As I stepped into more in my business, my whole life changed rapidly. I have grown exponentially in mind, body and soul. What may have looked (ok, and sometimes felt) like chaos led to where I am today. Openness and taking actions on a daily basis has transformed my world. For the past 2 and a half months I’ve been doing a nutritional cleanse using Isagenix products. I’ve become the Isagenie, documenting my journey daily at isagenie3.blogspot.com. The journey has been a roller coaster ride, filled with fun and excitement and thrills! My entries are short (usually) and sweet and punctuated with cool, inspiring images!
Like my body, my business is still a work in progress. But really that’s okay with me.
People ask what do you do? My answer, for better or worse, is this … I’m a writer and strategist who can help you create business buzz using media, marketing and communications. I write newsletters, ghost blogs, bios, sales materials, and more. (I even had one client profiled for Match.com!) My latest foray is social media. It’s a brave new world, with a myriad of opportunity! Come partner with me and build your business – we’ll have some fun and get the job done!
